Music Training

My oldest, Johnny, is definitely my mini me, we have the same sense of humor (poop jokes never go out of style!), we both go on long rants about random facts about things nobody knows or cares about (he's pretty astute for a 4yr old [and he can use astute in a sentence properly]) and we are both huge music geeks. Now because we are big into music in my household you can imagine my disappointment one day when I heard him singing Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball".

I made the same face too. NO. NOPE. NEVER.


Must've learned it at daddy's house is my theory. Anyways, I gave Johnny a homework assignment.

He was pretty excited to listen to Mommy's music but made a sad face for the camera because he's a ham.


I sent him to pick out 3 random CD's of mine and he had to listen to them; he ended up picking out Billy Joel - The Complete Collection, The Misfits - American Psycho, and Beastie Boys - License to Ill.
 
Yesterday I heard him banging on his drum set singing "Let Me Go Home". I asked him what he was singing and he proceeds to tell me that it's Let Me Go Home by the Beach Boys, that there used to be 5 Beach Boys in the band but not any more, blah blah blah just talking my ears off with facts about the Beach Boys that no other normal 4yr old would give a rat's ass about... proud music momma moment right there :-)

Beer Tasting

My boyfriend and I are huge fans of beer and we love discovering our new favorite beer (the next one!) but drinking home alone is a sign of alcoholism so we came up with Beer Tasting and Game Nights - nothing too extravagant, just a bunch of friends sitting around playing Cards Against Humanity and trying out new to us drinks.

And did I mention we have a score sheet? Otherwise we'd just be a bunch of losers sitting around drinking, now we're all official like! And hopefully once it warms up we can move the festivities outside for grilling, fire pit, and corn hole :-)

Total Wine has been awesome about helping us find new beers to try out, and we've been having a lot of fun with the last two Nights. The last one had an Irish beer and food theme since it fell around St. Patrick's Day, since I'm going to be super busy and Sean is out of town in April I think our next one (late April/early May) will have a Mexican theme for Cinco de Mayo. Do you have any beer or food suggestions for us?

Butterfly Birthday Cake

I made this cake for my niece on her birthday, it has got to be the easiest template ever.




The sky is the limit when to comes to decorating it! For Gabby's cake, I baked 2x cakes in 9" pans, let them cool and then stacked them on top of each other (separated by chocolate frosting). I cut and arranged them like in the template then covered them with buttercream frosting. I used pre-printed sugar sheets for the designs, and sprinkles and icing for the rest of the decorations. For the butterfly's body I used a marshmallow stick sprayed in food coloring spray, but you can also use a 8-10" candy stick. I held the candle up on the tray by using meting chocolate discs.

Not bad for a first try, huh?
 
 
I'd definitely recommend practicing drawing or cutting out the designs before the actual big day so yours doesn't come out as wonky as mine (but that's what my sister get for having me make it last minute).

French Cinnamon Breakfast & Lemon Blueberry Muffins recipes

I made these for a MWR bake sale, my little monsters LOVED them and they were a top seller the next day.

FRENCH BREAKFAST MUFFINS
 


MUFFIN:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
-
- 1 1/2 tsps baking powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup milk
 
TOPPING:
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/3 cup melted butter
 
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Make a well in the center of the mixture. Stir together egg, milk and the melted butter. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; stir until just moistened (batter may be lumpy). Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups.
 
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Meanwhile, combine the set aside sugar and cinnamon. When muffins are finished baking, dip tops of muffins in the melted butter, and then in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Serve warm.

LEMON BLUEBERRY MUFFINS


MUFFIN:
- 2 cups + 1 tbsp all purpose flour

- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 1/2 tsps baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup creme fraiche
- 2 tbsps milk
- 2 tbsps lemon juice
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1 egg
- zest of 1/2 a lemon
- 1 tsp lemon extract
- 1 1/2 cup fresh blueberries

 
TOPPING:
- 1/2 tbsp butter, cold
- 2 tbsps sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsps flour
-1/2 tsp lemon zest
 
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Mix the topping ingredients together, cutting in the butter with a pastry cutter or a fork until its crumbly and set aside.

Toss blueberries with 1 tablespoon of flour to coat. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Combine the creme fraiche, milk, oil, egg and extract together. Pour the wet mixture into the dry, stir, add the lemon juice and continue to mix until the dough comes together. Fold in the blueberries.

Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin, sprinkle with topping and bake in your  preheated oven for 20-25 minutes.
